Triskellion 2 The Burning Will Peterson Books Reviews
Gold Star Award Winner!
With the help of the mysterious Gabriel, Rachel and Adam have managed to escape from the village of Triskellion and their mysterious family heritage.
Soon, however, they are betrayed and captured by the mysterious Hope Agency and are experimented on and held prisoner. When more of their "special abilities" start surfacing, the twins realize that staying at the Hope Agency is not safe.
With the help of three other sets of twins, the two escape and are chased across Europe by the Hope Agency and others. Always in danger, the six hone their powers and learn to fight back, but soon realize that no one can be trusted and this flight is a fight for survival, possibly to the death.
Will Rachel and Adam be able to get away from the evildoers pursuing them? Will they learn to use their powers in time?
THE BURNING is a fast-paced adventure that's well worth the read. Readers will be on the edge of their seats on the race across Europe with Rachel and Adam. The plot is well done with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing about what's really going on and where Rachel and Adam truly come from. The characters are appealing and interesting to follow throughout the story.
Those who like reading fantasy, adventure, science fiction, paranormal fiction, and books like THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Rick Riordan will enjoy reading this book. It is, however, recommended that you first read book one, TRISKELLION.

Please understand that all my reviews focus on the interests of my middle school students. I never do a full plot synopsis in a review.
I seldom review more than the first book in a series, figuring if someone reads the first book they can decide for themselves if they want to continue. I am making an exception because this book is quite superior to the first one.
Don't get me wrong the first book was pretty good. I just felt like the characters (especially Gabriel) needed development and that some of the plot elements seemed "thrown in" in an effort to get to the end. In addition, it simply left too many questions unanswered.
Well, the authors (Will Peterson is a pseudonym for Mark Billingham and Peter Cocks) take care of all of that in the sequel. After a beginning which is repetitious (ok, we get it they are not really rescued), the book takes off at a breathless, can't turn the page fast enough pace. The character development is expanded, new characters are added seamlessly, and tension abounds. The book will not leave you in a deep philosophical funk about the nebulous nature of truth, but it will leave you breathless.
In the first book, two 14 year-old twins (Rachel and Adam) had been sent to live with their grandmother in England while their parents put the final touches on a nasty divorce. While they are there, they befriend a slightly older boy named Gabriel, who always seems to be there when they need him, especially as it becomes apparent they are in grave danger for reasons that seem to have to do with their genealogy. You never really get a handle on Gabriel; he is too mysterious and aloof to have even a personality.
In the second book, it becomes apparent that these kids have a strong genetic connection to some pretty powerful and out-of-this-world ancestors. This connection gives the kids some potentially powerful abilities. Needless to say, nefarious governments and institutions want to harness this power. There are other people who just see such power as evil and want to kill any kids (it runs in families and manifests in twins) who have it. So the kids are on the run, seeking to obtain powerful relics their ancestors have left for them.
On the way, we really get to know the twins and Gabriel. Other twins are picked up during the trek and are developed according to their importance to the plot. The universal theme of the bonding that occurs in shared adversity is well developed. The book is all about the action and the characters; it seems to intentionally avoid opportunities to delve too deeply into issues that almost beg for attention (like, where the heck is the dad?).
During the struggle, Gabriel uses bees in an excellently written speech as an example of how people should work together; bees naturally identify these kids as good for the earth (not going to give that away; you'll see) and so work to protect them at key times. Anyway, Gabriel's speech tickled my brain; I had something in my memory that resonated with his eloquence. I finally put it together it reminded me of the Archbishop's dialogue about bees in Henry V which begins, "So work the honeybees . . ." It makes very similar observations.
If you're looking for a quick, action packed, thrilling read that doesn't get too deep, this is a great find.
